A Fusion of Architectural Grounding and Interior Tranquility

Designed for the past, present, and future—a home that truly breathes and belongs.

Nestled in a serene corner of Adyar, Chennai, bordering the tranquil Theosophical Society, stands a home where architecture and interiors converge to create a harmonious living space. Spanning 7800 sq. ft., this house is more than just a structure; it is a reflection of the family’s aspirations to provide a haven for their ageing parents, while preserving a deep sense of calm and rootedness.

The ground and first floors, conceptualized as Avasa—a Sanskrit word for "abode"—are a testament to the power of architectural vision. Avasa is where the past and present merge—an abode that carries the weight of tradition, yet breathes with the freedom of modernity, creating a space where heritage is not just preserved, but reimagined. The original layout, with its angular geometry and fragmented spaces, posed a challenge that the design team met by reimagining the structure. By stripping it back to its core and introducing a more open, fluid layout, they created a home that breathes. A small lounge welcomes visitors, leading to an expansive living area that flows seamlessly into an inviting sit-out. A quiet Puja room, a warm dining space, and two kitchens—central and service—enhance the functionality, while a thoughtful extension of the outdoor space brings nature inside, dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior. Neutral tones form a muted foundation, complemented by warm red, orange, and burgundy hues. Hardwood takes center stage, adorning walls, ceilings, and furniture, providing organic warmth to the interiors.

“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” — Albert Einstein

Upstairs, the second floor, Ether, is a personal retreat. Designed to offer serenity and lightness, Ether is where the client can unwind and reflect. A well-travelled individual with a love for movies and books, he sought a space to display his vintage movie posters and cherished literature. The design here is minimalist yet timeless—soft curves, organic hardwood, and warm earthy tones create a peaceful sanctuary where modern aesthetics meet tranquility. Ether embodies simplicity, with every element curated to foster a sense of calm and spaciousness. The soft organic textures and subtle interplay of light and shadow offer a peaceful sanctuary.

Avasa and Ether together represent more than just distinct architectural and interior projects—they are a seamless blend of old and new, of tradition and modernity, of functionality and comfort.
