GAYATRI GUNJAL

Principal Architect at YellowSub Studio

In a world where creativity often lies at the intersection of art and science, Gayatri Gunjal has carved out a unique path that fuses form and function in a way that transcends traditional boundaries. A designer with an unyielding spirit, she blends her diverse experiences from architecture, industrial design, and a passion for the great outdoors into every piece of work she creates.

Her journey began at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, where she initially sought to explore the realm of Interior Architecture. Yet, it was at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, where her creative horizon expanded, and she found herself immersed in the study of Industrial and Product Design. Upon graduation, she worked with global giants like LG, Philips, and Kyocera. Yet, amid the structured world of corporate design, Gayatri realized something was missing. “I wanted to get my hands messy, do something physically challenging, and more personal,” she recalls. Her quest for deeper connection led her to Milan, to Domus Academy, where she pursued her Masters in Living Design, absorbing the Italian passion for craftsmanship and European design thinking.

Her exposure to a myriad of diverse practitioners and the Italian design ethos shaped her understanding of design. It was during this period that Gayatri had the opportunity to work with the renowned designer Ferragamo, adding yet another layer of expertise to her creative journey.

In 2014, she took the bold step of founding YellowSub Studio in Chennai, South India — a space where imagination meets functionality, where design is an ongoing exploration rather than a final product. The studio is a manifestation of her ethos: design is not static, but a dynamic, collaborative process that unfolds through various ideas, perspectives, and conversations. Yellow Sub Studio is where the transformative power of design takes shape, guided by Gayatri's belief that every project is an opportunity to question, challenge, and reimagine.

At YellowSub, the focus is on creating spaces and objects that resonate deeply with those who experience them. The studio thrives on a hands-on, personal approach to every project, with an emphasis on creating designs that are both beautiful and meaningful. Gayatri has built a creative haven where ideas are nurtured, where aesthetics meet function, and where the boundaries of design are constantly pushed.

Yet, her journey hasn’t been purely academic or professional. Gayatri's first love, before design, was sport — a passion that saw her rise to the ranks of a State-level badminton player and a National-level junior hockey player. Her competitive spirit remains alive, mirrored in her professional endeavours, where she consistently strives to challenge norms and push herself to new limits.

Beyond design, Gayatri is an adventurer at heart. Her love for the mountains has led her to scale peaks upto 6000 meters, embodying a resilience and drive that are reflected in the meticulousness of her work. Each mountain, each climb, is a testament to her belief in pushing boundaries and finding inspiration in the natural world.

Gayatri Gunjal’s journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the unyielding pursuit of self-expression. Through her work, she continues to redefine what’s possible, blending creativity with purpose, and reminding us all that the path to artistic discovery is one of constant exploration and reinvention.

Our Design Philosophy

We are driven by the desire to constantly challenge the ordinary and reinvent the wheel along with ourselves to offer designs that are modern, yet deeply connected to the rich diversity that defines the country. Our ethos lies in crafting spaces that resonate with individuality—each design a reflection of its unique narrative, yet all imbued with the subtle and unmistakable undertones of our distinct language.
